"I AM THE EVER-VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF THE TRUE GOD."
I could hardly believe my ears! Perhaps, I didn't hear correctly so I raised my hand and asked the professor to repeat his remark. "Are you shocked," he smirked? "I said that probably Mary had normal relations with Joseph and that Jesus had brothers and sisters." With more indignation than prudence, I headed for the Rector's office accompanied by four other seminarians. Fortunately, in Father Leo Ovian we found a sympathetic ear. The professor, a layman, was reprimanded and subsequently dismissed.
Let us be clear! Catholic faith is precisely this. The Blessed Virgin Mary remained a virgin before the birth of Christ, during the birth of Christ and after the birth of Christ. As she identified herself at Guadalupe, she is the Ever Virgin Mother of God. This is a solemnly defined dogma of Catholic faith which no one is free to deny and remain a Catholic in good standing. Mary's Perpetual Virginity has been the constant teaching of Popes, Councils, Father and Doctors of the Church from the beginning.
The Lateran Council in 649, under Pope Martin I, taught that "the Blessed, Ever-Virginal and Immaculate Mary conceived of the Holy Ghost without human seed. She gave birth without injury to her virginity and remained in perpetual virginity after the birth." In 1555, Pope Paul IV taught that the Virgin Mary retained her virginal integrity, before, during and after the birth of Christ. Pope John Paul II reaffirmed this dogma in an address to a Marian Study Conference on June 10, 1992 taught that: "The Church, in confessing her faith in the Mother of God's virginity, proclaims as factually true that Mary: a) truly conceived Jesus by the Holy Spirit without human intervention; b) truly and virginally gave birth to her Son; c) remained a virgin after His birth in everything that concerns the integrity of the flesh. She lived in total and perpetual virginity after Jesus' birth. Together with St. Joseph, who was also called to play a primary role in the initial events of our salvation, she devoted herself to serving the Person and work of her Son."
What could be more clear? Yet, time and again "so-called" theologians will upset and confuse the faithful by denying or obscuring this dogma of Catholic faith. Perhaps, this is due to the fixation that modern society has with sexual activity. Pagan culture has so identified love with sex that it cannot imagine how one can remain a virgin or live a celibate life. In its slavery to sin, modern culture despises both chastity and motherhood.
Yet, Mary is both Virgin and Mother. She is the Mother of God! What a breathtaking title! But, Mother of God she is for she gave Jesus a Human Nature. Mary is also Mother of the Church and of individual Christians. When Jesus said to John: "Behold your Mother," He was speaking to you and me, individually. Each one of us can look at Our Lady and say: "THERE IS MY MOTHER! SHE IS MY BLESSED MOTHER IN HEAVEN."
Calling into question the Perpetual Virginity of Our Lady is a sure way to provoke Catholic outrage. There are sins and there are sins. Everyone will appear before the judgment seat of Jesus Christ with their sins. But how will a person respond to the question of Jesus: "What did you say about my Mother?"
THE ANGEL OF THE LORD DECLARED UNTO MARY AND SHE CONCEIVED OF THE HOLY SPIRIT! HAIL MARY! AND THE WORD BECAME FLESH! HOLY MARY, MOTHER OF GOD, PRAY FOR US SINNERS! AMEN
